HIPAA Omnibus Final Rule Released: Major Impact for Providers

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published an Omnibus Final Rule1 on January 25, 2013, which modifies the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and implements statutory amendments under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act). This 563-page Final Rule greatly enhances a patient's privacy protections, changes business associate definitions, redefines a breach and strengthens the government's ability to enforce the law.
